MLB timing gives the pitcher a window to begin delivery motion. That is the event an operator should mark in this tool. Ball release and the catcher's reception happen later.
| Situation | Time | Try it |
|---|---|---|
| Bases empty | 15 seconds | Open 15s clock |
| Runners on | 18 seconds | Open 18s clock |
| Between batters | 30 seconds | Open 30s clock |
Why the eight-second mark matters
The batter must be in the box and alert to the pitcher at eight seconds remaining. The 15s and 18s profiles show a visual reminder. It is an observation prompt; the app neither sees the batter nor makes a call. Sound is optional and starts off.
Pickoffs and step-offs need an operator
With runners on, a pickoff attempt or step-off resets the official timer. MLB allows two disengagements per plate appearance; runner advancement resets that limit. An unsuccessful third pickoff attempt can cause a runner to advance. A mound visit or injury timeout is a different event.
This tool does not track those limits. Pause or reset manually after assessing the situation. Selecting Runners On changes the training duration; it does not decide whether a reset or another disengagement is allowed.
Expiration is not an app-generated ruling
Official pitcher and batter timer infractions can result in a ball or strike. Those are adjudicated on the field. Our zero display means only that this browser countdown ended. It never awards a penalty and never starts the next pitch by itself. Special circumstances, dead balls and umpire instructions can affect timing.
A practice example
In a hypothetical bases-empty rep, the coach starts a 15-second window and records delivery motion at 14.6 seconds elapsed. That is within this practice target even if the whole-second display is close to zero. An unmarked expired rep is unknown until the coach explicitly confirms or corrects it.
Quick answers
Does the ball have to leave the hand before zero?
The relevant event is the beginning of delivery motion. That is why the operator button says Pitch Motion.
When should I start this browser clock?
Only when the operator judges the appropriate start condition. This is an unofficial timing aid, not a synchronized stadium system.
Does college baseball use the same preset?
No. Our NCAA 2025–26 explainer describes a separate manual 20-second action-clock profile.
